Castellana Caves: an enchanting tour

During our awesome 10 days travel in Puglia, where we saw spectacular places, we had a stop in Castellana, to visit the famous Castellana Caves.

Castellana is a very small town in Puglia, near Bari. If you are organizing a travel in this area, we suggest you not to lose the opportunity to admire this enchanted speleological complex.

The tour of Caves

The Caves, or Grotte (in Italian) are the main, maybe the only, tourist attraction of Castellana. Since the moment they were discovered, the inhabitant understood that they would have become a great resource for the territory. Indeed, nowadays, hundreds of travelers reach every day Castellana Grotte to live this extraordinary experience.

Once in Castellana, you can park easily your car and go towards the entrance of the complex. Here, you can buy your ticket, if you haven’t done it before on line. There are two different tours between which you can choose:  the complete itinerary, that lasts about 120 mins and it is long 3 km, and the partial itinerary that lasts 50 mins and it is long 1 km. We opted for the complete one, and I am sure that this is the best choice.

If you are afraid of small spaces or to be underground, be sure to be ready for this experience. But don’t worry, the staff will help you to come back to the start point if you need.

Don’t forget that the temperature there is very different from outside, even in a hot day in summer, in the caves there are about 14° and 18°, so bring with you a coat.

Prices and timetable

As regard the prices, the tours are not so expensive. The short one is 12 euros, while the other is 16. A very low price to live such an unique adventure. In this price is included a guide who will drive you through the caves exlaining all you need to know.

The Castellana Caves are open all year long, except for December 25th, but with different times. You can find this timetable on the official website, here. As you can see, also the tours in other languages (English, French and German) are indicated.

How to reach Castellana Caves

The nearest airport is in Bari. From here, you can take a bus to go to Castellana.

If you are already in Italy and you have the chance to drive since there, do it! The scenarios that you will find along the way are unforgettable!

We made a coast-to-coast on-the-road travel through Puglia and we have seen incredible places. You could read about our adventure here, the post is in Italian, but you could understand how much we have loved those place by the amazing photos!
