In our last post in English we have talked about Amalfi Coast (you can read it here), that is situated north of Salerno. Cilento, instead, is a geographical region just in the South of the Province of Salerno. It is characterized by an enchanting coast and wonderful location in the hinterland.
The sea places and villages of Cilento
One of the strength of Cilento is doubtless the sea. The coast is situated between Paestum and Gulf of Policastro. Along these miles, you could admire some of the most beautiful Italian beaches. The sea is clean in the majority of places and there is everywhere a relaxing atmosphere due to the charming landscape.
Among the best sea places, I advise you to visit Baia di Trentova, Santa Maria di Castellabate and Marina di Camerota. All this sea locations are very close to their residential zones, so they are perfect for a holiday.
Baia di Trentova
Baia di Trentova is the most beautiful beach in the Gulf of Agropoli. It is not so large, so it is better to visit it in May, June and September, during July and August it is full of tourists, above all in weekends.
If you would like to stay overnight, you can easily find a place in Agropoli, such as a room in a hotel or a flat. Agropoli is an amazing village made of an old town and a newer part. In old town you can walk among typical alleys, reaching the top of the city where is situated an old castle.
Santa Maria di Castellabate
The beach of Santa Maria is longer, so it could be easier to find place even in the most crowded period. Here the sea bottom is sandy and the level of water is low near the coast, so it is a good choice above all for families with children. The sea is incredible!
Castellabate is the village just on the beach, it is a charming town where you can feel strongly the Italian atmosphere. In 1811 Gioacchino Murat, a Marshal of France and Admiral of France under the reign of Napoleon, said about Castellabate “Qui non si muore” (“Here no one passes away”).
Camerota
Along the coast of Camerota, another wonderful city where to stay, there are amazing sea places. It is characterized by a lot of small bays enclosed in the rocks. Each of them is a unique location, somewhere there is just the beach, without services – you can live a totally natural experience.
The easiest way to reach these places is by sea. You can go by boat from the harbor of Marina di Camerota, but if you want, you can try to go by foot. One of the most beautiful bay is Cala Bianca, and you can reach it walking from Camerota for about one hour. It is a hard challenge, but it’s worth the effort!
